Renal Cell

Large solid renal cell carcinoma without metastasis
Case overview
This case study focuses on how proactive whole body MRI (WB-MRI) screening can improve health outcomes for patients with cancer, particularly for cancers that lack standard screening tests, such as renal cell carcinoma.
Patient History
- A 46-year-old male in good overall health without any active medical issues or symptoms.
- The patient was aware of toxin exposures due to prior military and demolition work, which led him to seek a WB-MRI for baseline proactive care.
Findings
As seen in Figure 1, the Prenuvo scan detected a large solid renal cell carcinoma without metastasis.
Follow-up care
Upon detection, the tumor was already too big for organ sparing surgery or minimally invasive techniques to be considered. However - thanks to proactive screening - the patient’s disease was accurately detected, diagnosed, and treated with a right nephrectomy before the cancer could spread.

Before: Image of right Kidney prior to any intervention

After: Follow-up scan 1 year later, after a right nephrectomy. No evidence of a concerning mass in the nephrectomy bed.
How the Prenuvo scan impacted patient care:
- RCC is one of ten most commonly diagnosed cancers in the United States each year; the rate of survival significantly increases the earlier cancer is found, especially when confined to only the affected kidney. Localized renal cancer has a 93.3% 5-year survival rate if detected while confined to the primary site.1 Currently there are no standard of care screening tests for kidney cancer.
- This patient’s malignancy was opportunistically identified thanks to his awareness of potential occupational risk factors, which led him to seek proactive W-B MRI screening.
- Timely follow up and surgical removal of the kidney prior to metastasis greatly improved this patient’s outcome, as his repeat scan recently showed no evidence of disease.
