Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements found in our environment, and most of us are exposed to small amounts through everyday life. While elevated exposure to certain heavy metals may be associated with health concerns, exposure doesn't automatically mean harm. The type of metal, the amount and duration of exposure, and your overall health all play a role. When appropriate, blood testing can help provide more objective information about exposure.

Heavy metals have been a hot topic in health and wellness conversations, with lots of talk focusing on the dangers of them building up in the body and the need to detox. While it’s true that high levels of heavy metals can have health consequences, the topic is more complex than many headlines and social media posts suggest. For most people, everyday exposures at low doses are not necessarily something to panic about and rush to detox from.

Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements found in soil, water, air, and rocks. Most of us are exposed to small amounts through everyday life. This can occur through the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the environment around us. 

Not all metals are bad for you. How heavy metals can enter the body

Heavy metals enter the body through three primary methods

Because heavy metals are present in soil, water, and air, they can infiltrate the foods that we eat. Most foods contain only trace amounts, but some tend to contain higher levels than others.

  • Rice absorbs more arsenic from water and soil than most foods, particularly brown rice. 
  • Larger predatory varieties of fish, like king mackerel, tuna, and marlin can be higher in mercury.

Why the body can be sensitive to heavy metals

A single heavy metal exposure doesn't automatically cause harm. In most cases, health concerns arise when exposure is high enough or happens repeatedly over time. This could also occur after a high level of exposure over a short period, such as during an occupational accident or while sanding lead-based paint without proper protective gear. Why symptoms alone are not enough

What happens if levels are elevated?
